Kirtland Community College today honored Munson Medical Center with its “Game Changer Award” for its partnership in helping students step into cardiac sonography careers.

The college’s President Thomas Quinn presented the award to Amie Smith, manager for the hospital’s Diagnostic Heart and Vascular Service Line and other team members, for the hospital’s commitment to providing internship opportunities for students over the past 10 years.

“We wanted to recognize the hospital’s contribution to the success of our students and community,” Quinn said. “Our Game Changer Award is our way of extending our gratitude and formally letting the hospital know it has been invaluable for Kirtland students. The training students receive at the college is only one aspect of their overall education, the other is the experience they receive while doing an internship in Traverse City or other Munson Healthcare facility.”

Over the past 10 years about 20 students have gone through the accredited program which involves five semesters of training, including a final semester internship.

“We are one of two or three accredited two-year associate degree adult echocardiography programs in the state of Michigan,” Quinn said.

Cardiac sonography uses ultrasound technology to help physicians diagnose issues in the heart and its chambers.

Smith said the partnership represents a win for both organizations.

“Munson Healthcare’s expert cardiologists and staff have worked diligently with Kirtland Community College to create a comprehensive clinical rotation for students enrolled in the cardiac sonography program,” she said. “Through this curriculum, Kirtland graduates are prepared to embark upon a successful career in cardiac diagnostics. You can find a number of graduates currently working throughout Munson Healthcare.”
