Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital’s Anticoagulation Clinic began seeing patients on January 14 and already has a satisfied customer. Sharon Conklin of Bear Lake was the clinic’s first patient.
“The visit was quick and convenient,” she said. “And the finger stick doesn’t hurt as much as a regular blood draw.” Conklin was referred to the clinic by one of her physicians. She said she attended a similar clinic before moving to Manistee County and is happy the service is now offered locally.
Conklin praised the anticoagulation pharmacist, Amanda Lipps, Pharm.D. “She’s very professional but also friendly and easy to talk to.” Lipps, who has special training in anticoagulation therapy, spearheaded the implementation of the clinic at Manistee Hospital. “Results of the finger stick are available within minutes, and I can discuss them with the patient and make any recommendations immediately,” said Lipps. The pharmacist will also share results with the primary care provider.
Brian McComb, DO, a family medicine physician in Manistee, says physicians and advanced practice professionals prescribing blood thinners also benefit from the program. “We hope the convenience of the clinic makes it easier for our patients to get the recommended testing. The quick results, along with the expert recommendations from the pharmacist, will help ensure we have the information we need to most effectively manage these powerful medications,” he said.
