Cowell Family Cancer Center Certified by Quality Group

07.09.2018

Munson Medical Center’s Cowell Family Cancer Center recently received certification through the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative®.

To achieve the certification, cancer center staff and leadership were evaluated on center practices and standards, and were required to submit quality data as well as consent to an on-site survey.

Cowell Family Cancer Center Medical Director David Gordon, M.D., said QOPI is the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s clinical excellence program for outpatient oncology services and practices.

“This means QOPI certified practices are functioning at the highest level of delivery of cancer care as defined by national standards,” Dr. Gordon said. “This in turn means that QOPI certified practices are delivering the best cancer care to their patients. The Cowell Family Cancer Center achieved this certification in 2018.”

The Quality Oncology Practice Initiative’s core standards for evaluation include:

  • Treatment planning
  • Staff training and education
  • Chemotherapy orders and drug preparation
  • Patient consent and education
  • Safe chemotherapy administration
  • Monitoring and assessment of patient well-being

The certification must be renewed every three years.

“This status demonstrated a commitment to excellence and ongoing quality improvement,” said Clifford A. Hudis, M.D., FACP, FASCO, president of Quality Oncology Practice Initiative’s certification program.
