Health Education Speaker Series Launches This Month

Helping Benzie County residents learn more about implementing and sustaining healthy active lifestyles is on the agenda for Betsie Hosick Health & Fitness Center in 2019.

The fitness center is sponsoring a free health education speaker series and a free fitness education series of classes for area residents as a way to provide opportunities for those who want to improve their quality of life.

“We are excited about being able to bring in health experts and offer opportunities for residents to pursue fitness goals they have for the year,” said Stephanie Williams, manager of Betsie Hosick Health & Fitness Center. “We believe the topics and classes will resonate with anyone looking to improve their health and wellness.”

All classes and fitness opportunities will be at the fitness center. The health education series is planned for 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. on the second Thursday of the month. This month on Thursday, March 14, the topic will be on “naturopathic medicine.” Future topics in the speaker series include:

  •  April 11 – “Swallowing, Speaking, and Throat Care”
  •  May 15 – “Medication Management”
  • June 19 – “Caring for a Loved One with Dementia”
  • July 17 – “Injury and Accident Prevention”
  • August 21 – “Advance Care Planning”
  • Sept. 18 – “Infection Prevention & Antibiotic Stewardship”

The fitness classes will be led by either a certified athletic trainer or physical therapist. Classes will be at either 1 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. at the center. The first session on “Getting Started – Creating a Fitness Routine” is set for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27. Future classes include:

  • April 24 at 1 p.m. – “Free Weights versus Machine Weights”
  • May 8 at 5:30 p.m. – “Free Running and Walking Assessments” (registration is required for this session; call 231-352-9661)
  • May 22 at 1 p.m. – “Equipment Tutorial”
  • June 12 at 5:30 p.m. – “Knee Pain”
  • June 26 at 1 p.m. – “The Role of Exercise with Diabetes”
  • July 10 at 5:30 p.m. – “Prevent Running and Exercise Injuries”
  • July 24 at 1 p.m. – “Strength Training Across the Lifespan”
  • Aug. 21 at 5:30 p.m. – “Body Mechanics Training for Parents and Coaches”
  • Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. “Supplements”
  • Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. – “Lower Back Pain”
  • Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. – “Taking Care of Sore Muscles”

All participants of either the speaker series or fitness classes will receive a free day pass to the fitness center.
