05.17.2019

The 32nd Annual Cancer Prevention and Survivors Picnic features free skin screenings, special speakers, and a wellness fair from 1 - 3:30 p.m. on June 9 in the Cowell Family Cancer Center parking lot. Bike rides in Leelanau County also are part of the day’s events.

The general public is invited to come and celebrate with cancer survivors and learn how to reduce one’s risk of cancer. Information will be available on cancer-related topics such as rehabilitation services, nutrition, and lymphedema. Free skin screenings will be provided by Laurel Leithauser, M.D., of the Skin Cancer and Dermatology Center, and Anthony Van Vreede, M.D. of V Dermatology.

Participants can enjoy food from the Sprout Café, learn about shiatsu therapy, healing touch and other therapies. There also will be a children’s activity area and music.

David Johnson, M.D., integrative health consultant and preventative cardiologist at Sleeping Bear Natural Medicine, will give a talk titled “Life as Medicine: Healing to Wholeness.” Additional speakers include: cancer survivor and Traverse City resident Janice Beyer; cancer center lead donor Casey Cowell; Less Cancer founder Bill Couzens; and Miles O’Brien, Emmy award-winning producer, journalist, and correspondent.

New this year: Northern Michigan cyclists are invited to join those from Less Cancer on a ride around Leelanau County to raise awareness and celebrate efforts against the disease. All rides start at 7 a.m. and range from 15 - 100 miles. For more information and to register, visit bikereg.com/42153.
