New Street in Place as Hospital Construction Continues

06.11.2019

Work on construction projects around Munson Medical Center continue on schedule with a traffic shift north to the new street in front of the Cowell Family Cancer Center expected on  Friday, June 14.

Vice President of Facilities Steve Tongue said preliminary street work to allow the shift will be completed by the end of this week. On Friday, a crane is expected to arrive and remain in place on Sixth Street between the entrance to the Main Lobby and Madison Street for the next few weeks.

“We are at the phase in our project where the traffic will shift on Sixth Street north to the new street between Beaumont Place and Madison Street,” Tongue said. “Limited parking will continue in front of the cancer center. We will continue to provide free valet parking for cancer center visitors.”

While the new street does not yet have a name, the City of Traverse City is currently considering the hospital’s request to name the new street “Decker Drive” in honor of James Decker Munson, the hospital’s namesake and original benefactor.

Meanwhile, a separate project to install a new bridge over Kids Creek at the Emergency Department entrance is fully operational. The bridge allows for improved flow of the creek. The project completed a multi-year effort and collaboration with The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay to restore the creek on the hospital’s campus.
