Construction Project Temporarily Closes Sixth Street Segment

Driving on the northern side of Munson Medical Center’s campus will become more complicated effective Monday, Sept. 16.

Construction on the Surgical Services expansion project will temporarily close Sixth Street from Madison Street to Brook Street through Oct. 16. Sixth Street has already been permanently closed between Beaumont Place and Madison Street. East-west access on the campus is now via the new street in front of the Cowell Family Cancer Center entrance.

Construction on Brook Street at Munson Medical Center’s power plant will also limit through traffic from the north to the south side of the campus.

Facilities Construction Director Jim Fegan said utilities for the Surgical Services expansion and future construction needs require crews to dig up Sixth Street in the first phase of new utility installation.

“We are asking the community not to use Munson Medical Center’s campus as a short cut to other destinations in town,” he said. “We ask all patients visiting physician offices on the north side of the hospital campus to follow the signs. The easiest way to access our Munson Professional Building will be from the south via Medical Campus Drive and Brook Street.”

Cowell Family Cancer Center remains accessible via Madison Street or Beaumont Place. Free valet parking is available to all cancer center patients.

All truck traffic is being asked to use West Front Street and Medical Campus Drive to access the hospital’s loading dock.

The Surgical Services project will add four new operating rooms as well as renovate and expand the hospital’s Central Processing Department and upgrade waiting areas. The project will last about two years.
