Bank Invests in Economic Need of Cancer Center
Bank Invests in Economic Impact of Cancer Center
Fifth Third Bank gives second $100,000 gift to show its support
Fifth Third Bank leadership appreciates Munson Medical Center’s commitment to use local contractors for the Cowell Family Cancer Center project when possible.
The bank announced its second $100,000 donation to the project.
“We appreciate the economic impact this facility will have on northern Michigan residents and patients in terms of jobs, access, and beyond that, Munson’s commitment to the local economy through its support of local construction firms,” said David Shooltz, community president of Fifth Third Northern Michigan.
As part of its recent round of construction bids, Munson Medical Center awarded $17 million in contracts to 12 contractors from the Grand Traverse region. Vice President of Facilities Steve Tongue said the hospital is thankful for the support and interest from the local construction community.
“We continue to appreciate the time and effort that all contractors put into their interest in our construction projects,” he said. Local firms working on the project include Advanced Fire Protection, Bay Masonry, Bloxsom Roofing, Comstock Construction, DW Mechanical, Floor Covering Brokers, Grand Traverse Nurseries, Integrity and Balance, Molon Excavating, National Coatings, and Windemuller Electric.
Shooltz said the bank made an initial $100,000 gift as part of a challenge grant in 2013. It made its second gift as a means to support Munson’s efforts that bolster the business economy in northern Michigan.
“We understand that Munson is the largest employer north of U.S. 10 and makes a significant impact to the local economy,” he said. “We want to help undergird that impact with this gift.”
Munson Medical Center broke ground on the Cowell Family Cancer Center in May. Plans call for the $45 million center to open in 2016.
