Hospital is recognized for efforts to identify, treat sepsis in Emergency Department

Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital recently was recognized with the 2014 Governor’s Award of Excellence for “Outstanding Outpatient Clinical Achievement in the Critical Access Hospital Setting.”

The facility was one of 188 Michigan hospitals, physician practices, nursing homes, and community coalitions honored for their achievements in health care quality. The award is presented by the health care quality organization MPRO and the office of Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder.

Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Debbie Link, R.N., said the hospital was honored for its efforts to quickly identify and initially care for sepsis patients in the Emergency Department.

“The award recognizes not only the work that Paul Oliver is doing related to sepsis but also the regional initiative related to sepsis,” she said. “Regionally, we are further ahead in our standardization of treatment for sepsis patients than other areas of the nation.”

Gov. Snyder said the Governor’s Award signifies efforts to improve health care quality and patient safety in the state.

“This award demonstrates Michigan’s deep commitment to providing high quality, safe, and efficient health care,” he said. “By using proven, evidence-based practices, these organizations are making sure individuals get the right care at the right time.”

The award criteria are based on the National Quality Strategy, Partnership for Patients, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Quality Improvement Organizations’ 10th Statement of Work. The preventive care metrics also align with the Governor’s Healthy Michigan 4X4 plan.

“We’re fortunate to be able to partner with Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital and other dedicated organizations across the state of Michigan,” said Robert Yellan, M.P.H., J.D., F.A.C.H.E., MPRO president and chief executive officer. “To be able to recognize these accomplishments with the Governor’s office underscores the importance of these efforts to improve health care quality in the state.”
