Cherry-Roubaix Ride Benefits Women’s Cancer Fund
Event features 20- and 43-mile course on Old Mission Peninsula

The 2011 Cherry-Roubaix cycling weekend in Traverse City Aug. 12 -14 will feature a charity ride to benefit the Munson Healthcare Women’s Cancer Fund on Saturday, Aug. 13.

The Cherry-Roubaix is a series of bicycle races over a three-day period that includes sprint competition, criterium races, and a road race. The weekend also kicks off the Third Coast Bicycle Festival and features the charity ride on Old Mission Peninsula. The charity ride will offer 20 or 43-mile routes and begins at 8:30 am at the Park Place Hotel in downtown Traverse City.

“This will be a friendly ride that offers all levels of cyclists the opportunity to participate in a dedicated route,” said John Sohacki, event director for the Cherry-Roubaix. Riders will be invited to take a break under the pines on the stately veranda of Bowers Harbor Inn, and Jolly Pumpkin will offer breakfast treats. Riders will finish at the Park Place Hotel in time to watch the downtown criterium race. Two tents will be set up for men and women to change and wash up.

At noon there will be a drawing for a bike raffle and a presentation of the check to Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation for the Women’s Cancer Fund.

The Women’s Cancer Fund is dedicated to providing financial assistance to women diagnosed with the disease and who are experiencing financial challenges while undergoing treatment. There are no administrative costs and all proceeds go directly to patients in need of assistance.

Pre-registration for the charity ride is from 5 - 8 pm Friday, Aug. 12, at the sprint start near the Omelette Shoppe at 124 Cass St. Participants may also pre-register online at cherry-roubaix.com/registration.php. On Saturday, Aug. 13, registration is from 7 - 8:10 am at the Park Place Hotel. Pre-registration fee is $30. Same-day registration is $35. Riders must be 16 years old.
