Munson Healthcare Affiliated Hospitals Among ‘Most Wired’

Munson Healthcare affiliated hospitals Munson Medical Center, Mercy Hospital Cadillac, and Otsego Memorial Hospital this week were recognized by the American Hospital Association’s journal Hospitals and Health Networks as “Most Wired” hospitals.
Munson Medical Center and Otsego Memorial Hospital were recognized as “Most Wired” and Mercy Hospital Cadillac as “Most Wired – Small and Rural.”
Munson Healthcare Chief Information Officer Chris Podges said hospital staff have worked very hard for more than a decade to achieve an advanced state of informatics. “This is the third year in a row we’ve been recognized by the AHA and I couldn’t be more proud of the skills and diligence and professionalism of our IT associates,” Podges said. “But it is also a reflection of the Munson Healthcare System as a whole, as physicians, nurses, accountants and registrars, dieticians and pharmacists have all adopted and embraced the constant changes brought about by technology and made us ultimately safer, of higher clinical quality, and more efficient. The award is great, but we’re far from finished on this journey.”
A report by the magazine details how “Most Wired” hospitals and health systems have made great strides in establishing the basic building blocks for creating robust clinical information systems aimed at improving patient care. This includes adopting technologies to improve patient documentation, advance clinical decision support and evidence-based protocols, reduce the likelihood of medication errors, and rapidly restore access to data in the event of a disaster or outage.
Judging was based on a hospital’s progress in adopting and implementing technology in four areas. These areas are:
• Business and administrative management
• Clinical quality and safety
• Care continuum for hospital outpatient areas, physician offices, and community clinics
The three Munson Healthcare affiliated hospitals continue to make significant investments in electronic medical record technology in the past few years and new federal requirements mean the hospitals are among those leading implementation efforts across the country.
“This year’s Most Wired organizations exemplify progress through innovation,” said Rich Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association. “The hospital field can learn from these outstanding organizations ways that IT can help to improve efficiency.”
Health Care’s Most Wired Survey, conducted earlier this year asked hospitals and health systems nationwide to answer questions about their IT initiatives. Respondents completed 659 surveys, representing 1,713 hospitals, or roughly 30 percent of all U.S. hospitals.
