Understanding the Health Insurance Marketplace
Program offers insight into accessing options for health coverage

Area residents have until March 31 to meet the deadline for health insurance coverage without penalty under the Affordable Care Act.

Special information sessions that outline the Health Insurance Marketplace will be offered at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24 at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital, and 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Lab building, 9973 Ottawa Ave. in Empire.

Trained Navigator Jennifer Hansen, of District Health Department #10, will offer insight into how navigators and certified application counselors can help guide individuals through the application process of the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Hansen will also be making a presentation in Traverse City that will be broadcast live in the REMEC room of the hospital from 5:30 - 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Information covered includes the various ways to apply, features of the website, information needed for enrollment, levels of plans, individual mandate, exemptions to the mandate, and much more.

Under the Affordable Care Act, health plans offered in the Health Insurance Marketplace must provide essential health benefits in 10 categories of care and follow established limits on cost-sharing.

People who do not meet the March 31 deadline, and are not exempted from coverage, will have to pay a penalty of $95 per adult and $47.50 per child. Fees will go up in 2015.

These programs are free and open to the public, however registration is requested. For more information, or to register, call (231) 352-2214.
