Occupation: Dental office manager
Procedure: Lap Band, 2008
Surgeon: David Kam, MD
Pre-surgery weight: 224 pounds
Current weight: 128 pounds
Background: I used to walk eight to 10 miles a day. In 1998, I was hit by a drunk driver while I was walking in my subdivision. I went through neurological recovery. After that, I had such fear of being outside walking or on a bike, and I like to exercise outside.
Decision point: My husband, Tim, also had the surgery. His brother and father both died before age 55 because of obesity. Our daughter is nine, and she’s just reaching those active years. We wanted to be able to play with her, to go biking and swimming without being embarrassed and out of breath all the time.
Life after surgery: We went from eating out every night to eating out twice a month. It’s a lifestyle change. I’m back to walking three to four miles a day. I have more energy now than I did in high school. This year, we’re all taking tennis lessons.
Shopping advice: We went to Goodwill to buy clothes because Tim was dropping a pant size or two every week.
We spent $10 a week shopping for that week’s clothes. Afterwards, we had a “big-person” garage sale and made all of our money back. People said, ‘How’d you get all of these clothes?’ We said they were ours, and people couldn’t believe it.
Parting thought: I had the surgery on Friday morning and went back to work on Monday morning. My health is the best it’s been in years. Go for it. It’s the best thing you’ll ever do for yourself and your family. If you just follow the rules, you’re not going to fail.
