Whether you prefer cloth diapers or disposable,
babies can get diaper rashes from urine contact or stool. You
can prevent diaper rash if you follow a few simple procedures:
Change diapers often.
Wash babys diaper area with clean
water. Some diaper wipes are saturated with alcohol and can
be an irritant to a rash already present.
Make sure the diaper area and skin folds
are dry.
Avoid use of plastic barriers or plastic
pants.
If your baby gets diaper rash, leave the diaper
off and air dry after each change if possible. Your babys
provider may recommend a special ointment or cream. Apply a thin
coat as directed after cleansing the skin. Contact your babys
health care provider if the rash does not go away, spreads, is
very red as if burned, or if you notice any bumps. Special medication
may be necessary to help clear this type of rash.
