Osteoporosis
is the most common disease affecting the bones. It occurs when
the density of bone in the body decreases, leaving the remaining
bone weak. Serious fractures may occur, causing pain, loss of
an independent and active lifestyle, and even death.
Osteoporosis was once thought to be an unavoidable
part of aging, particularly for women, but we now know this disease
is preventable and that prevention should begin in childhood.
The Comprehensive Osteoporosis Program
Once diagnosed with Osteoporosis, your physician may refer you
to the Comprehensive Osteoporosis Program. The program includes:
Patient Education
A Registered Nurse Patient Educator is available for individualized
education sessions, to will help you understand osteoporosis,
specific
risk factors, medications, diet, and exercise. You will
receive educational materials, plus a list of local and national
resources.
Nutritional Counseling
A registered dietitian is available to provide counseling for
challenging nutritional needs related to osteoporosis, such
as eating disorders, lactose intolerance, or nutritional deficiencies
related to illness.
Physical Therapy
Upon referral to Physical
Therapy, you will be evaluated in several areas including
posture, strength, and balance. Personalized instruction and
an individualized exercise program, to be followed at home,
will also be included. A balance program for those who are unsteady
and at risk for falls will be implemented if needed.
