Integrated Medical Services

Optimal cancer care requires close interdisciplinary cooperation among physicians and clinicians, which will be made possible by the cancer center. Having oncology physicians in close proximity both eases the burden on the patient and improves the quality of care by facilitating communication between health care providers. When in place, the cancer center will shorten the time between cancer diagnosis and implementing treatment. We envision specialty clinics for breast and prostate cancers, as well as expanded research and clinical trials, and cancer genetics clinics on site.

Newest Technology

Our commitment is that all cancer patients will have the comfort of knowing that they are receiving the very best care, at the hands of the most accomplished and compassionate staff and physicians, close to home. The new cancer center will include enhanced radiation therapy with stereotactic radiosurgery, the most advanced, powerful, and precise cancer treatment technology today. Radiation oncologists who use the new device at Munson Medical Center call it a "game changer" for patients with inoperable tumors.

Emotional Support

An important aspect of cancer care is offering holistic, supportive services and therapies in conjunction with medical treatment. Emotional well-being, good nutrition, stress management, massage therapy and exercise treatment options help reduce side effects of the disease and promote better health. The new cancer center will offer services like these in addition to a cancer library, classes, and support groups. Patients will have someone to turn to for support and questions.

Physician Recruitment

A world class cancer center at Munson Medical Center will attract and maintain the best and brightest physicians to our region, enhancing the outstanding medical care and cancer research currently taking place. Most new cancer specialists want to work in a high-quality cancer center, in an environment that embraces compassionate, coordinated care of patients, provides advanced, state-of-the-art treatment and inspires new insights. Having such a facility will enable the recruitment and retention of well-trained oncology specialists, and meet the needs of our growing northern Michigan community.

Referral Relationships

A Cancer Center will further strengthen our referral relationships with oncology programs at the University of Michigan, the Mayo Clinic, Karmanos Cancer Center, and other leading treatment centers. In addition, we plan to expand our capacity for pediatric cancer care through the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Pediatric Hematology/Oncology clinic currently established at Munson Medical Center.
