Medication Check-ups:
A Free Employee Health Benefit

Are You Medicating Safely?

You’re standing in your kitchen with your morning cup of coffee in one hand, and a handful of pills in the other. You’re holding your daily aspirin, your multi-vitamin, your herbal supplement, and those two prescriptions your physician wants you to take. Have you ever wondered how all of those daily doses interact? Now there’s a free and easy way to find out. As a Munson employee, you can schedule a Medication Check-up with a Munson pharmacist at no cost to you.

Medication Therapy Management

Medication Check-ups are a key component of Munson’s Medication Therapy Management (MTM) Program. This is your opportunity to meet one-on-one with a pharmacist to review all of your medications.

You will learn how medications work in your body, how to avoid side effects, reduce medication expenses, and reduce or manage your symptoms. During a scheduled Medication Check-Up, a pharmacist will also verify that you are taking your medications safely. Any concerns are communicated to your physician.

Munson Community Health Center Pharmacist Kathleen Brown, RPh, provides this service. The Michigan Pharmacists Association recently named her the “Community Pharmacist of the Year.”

Who should have a Medication Check-up?

If you use prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, or other dietary supplements, you may be helped by a Medication Check-up. Employees or dependents covered through Munson’s Priority Health plan who take four or more medications qualify for this free service. You also may be referred for this service by your physician, which is most beneficial if you:

  • Use several medications
  • Have several health conditions
  • Have questions or problems with your medications
  • Take medications that require laboratory monitoring
  • Have been hospitalized recently
  • Have recently changed your medications
  • Want to reduce your out-of-pocket costs
  • Purchase medications from more than one place

Benefits of Medication Check-ups

Medication Check-ups can provide real benefits. Studies have found that people who meet with their pharmacist to manage their medications have:

  • Improved management of health conditions, such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, depression, and blood clots
  • A better understanding of how to take their medications
  • Fewer problems caused by medications
  • Fewer hospitalizations
  • Fewer trips to the emergency department
  • Lower health care costs
  • Increased productivity and decreased sick days
  • Customized medication record to share with your providers
