Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, involves scanning part of the body with high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body enabling physicians to diagnose and treat medical conditions. The images obtained during an ultrasound are captured in real-time, meaning the images can show the structure and movement of the body's internal organs. Ultrasound imaging is usually a painless procedure and does not involve ionizing radiation (x-rays). A specialized ultrasound exam called Doppler Ultrasound uses an ultrasound technique that evaluates blood as it flows through blood vessels.

Munson Medical Center’s ultrasound department consists of sonographers that are registered by the American Registry of Medical Sonography (ARDMS). The ARDMS requires that registered sonographers possess high levels of knowledge and proficiency of ultrasound exams. With 100+ years of combined experience, our ultrasound department ranks as one of the best. Munson’s ultrasound department is also accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL). These accreditation ensure that we are providing the highest quality standards for ultrasounds and vascular testing to our patients.

Patients having an obstetrics (OB) ultrasound can watch their ultrasound on a flat screen monitor while the ultrasound technologist provides an overview. Pictures and/or a CD are provided and, with the baby’s cooperation, 3D/4D imaging can be attempted after approximately 25 weeks. Munson’s ultrasound department also performs high-risk OB evaluations in conjunction with a Perinatologist from Grand Rapids twice a month.

Ultrasounds are performed at Munson Medical Center’s main campus, Munson’s Community Health Center (MCHC), and Smith Family Breast Health Center (Breast Ultrasound).

Please note that our expertise lies in the performance of the exam and not in its interpretation. Our technologists are unable to give any results at the time of your exam.
