Support Chill Out for Winter Safety

Chill Out for Winter Safety was developed following the passing of a vibrant young girl named Carly. Carly was eight years old when she lost her life in a tragic sledding accident. Carly's mom and Munson Healthcare team member, Tammie Budrow, created the Chill Out program to help protect other families from suffering the same tragedy. Through this program, Tammie and Munson Healthcare experts visit schools and ski and sledding hills across the region to provide important winter safety and helmet education, as well as helmet fittings and free helmets.

Program Impact

Chill Out for Winter Safety provides over 500 free helmets and delivers education to over 2,500 kids in northern Michigan each year.

Here's what some of our community members have to say about this program:

  • “I am a single mom with 3 kids. They all have bicycle helmets, but I couldn’t afford winter helmets for them too. Thank you!”

  • “These kids learn that wearing a helmet while skiing is just as important as buckling their seat belt when in a car. There is no doubt that this program prevents injuries and saves lives."

  • “My child took notes on the four things to remember and was humming the song for a few days. It helped reiterate what I tell her and taught us both something new!”
