Hospital’s Eden Center Receives Governor’s Award
Facility is recognized for its efforts to help residents maintain independence

Kalkaska Memorial Health Center’s Eden Center recently was recognized with the 2014 Governor’s Award of Excellence for “Outstanding Achievement in Reducing Health Care Acquired Conditions.”

The facility was one of 188 Michigan hospitals, physician practices, nursing homes, and community coalitions honored for their achievements in health care quality. The award is presented by the health care quality organization MPRO and the office of Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder.

At Kalkaska Memorial, Eden Center Director of Nursing Renee Cunningham, M.S.N., R.N., said the center received its award based on efforts to prevent falls, help residents maintain independence, reduce the level of anti-psychotic medications, and create permanent staffing assignments.

“We’re working hard to ensure our residents experience high quality of care and comfort similar to home,” she said. “This recognition reaffirms for our community the quality of care and commitment our staff offers their loved ones each and every day.”

Gov. Snyder said the Governor’s Award signifies efforts to improve health care quality and patient safety in the state.

“This award demonstrates Michigan’s deep commitment to providing high quality, safe, and efficient health care,” he said. “By using proven, evidence-based practices, these organizations are making sure individuals get the right care at the right time.”

The award criteria are based on the National Quality Strategy, Partnership for Patients, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Quality Improvement Organizations’ 10th Statement of Work. The preventive care metrics also align with the Governor’s Healthy Michigan 4X4 plan.

“We’re fortunate to be able to partner with Kalkaska Memorial’s Eden Center and other dedicated organizations across the state of Michigan,” said Robert Yellan, M.P.H., J.D., F.A.C.H.E., MPRO president and chief executive officer. “To be able to recognize these accomplishments with the Governor’s office underscores the importance of these efforts to improve health care quality in the state.”
