Women and Heart Disease: Events Raise Awareness
February features a series of fundraisers, activities, and screenings
During American Heart Month in February, Munson Medical Center and partnering organizations will feature a series of events under the theme “Heart to Heart for Women” to raise awareness about women and heart disease.
Following is a rundown of the events:
Thursday, Feb. 2
Lil’ Bo Pub and Grille Fundraiser, 5 - 8 pm

Lil’ Bo will donate 25 percent of sales during a special benefit for Munson’s Cardiac Care Fund which supports the Heart-to-Heart for Women program. The benefit features acoustic music from Three Hour Tour, a silent auction including an Optishot Infrared Golf Simulator by Dancin’ Dogg Golf, raffle, and free appetizers. Women’s Cardiac Awareness Group, 7 - 8:30 pm
An awareness group for women who have lived through a cardiac event or who just want to learn more about heart disease meets at the Dr. William W. Kitti Education Center in Kalkaska the first Thursday of each month. For more information, call 1-888-838-9160.
Friday, Feb. 3
National Wear Red Day

The American Heart Association has designated Feb. 3 as National Wear Red Day to raise awareness about the fight against heart disease in women. Area residents are encouraged to wear red to work, to play, or wherever else the day’s schedule leads.

Several downtown Traverse City merchants are offering a 10 percent discount for all customers who wear red.
State Theatre’s Friday Night Flick, 11:45 pm

An Owner’s Guide for Your Heart – 2012 Edition, 6 - 8 pm
Cardiologist Dino Recchia, MD, FACC, will discuss practical ways to prevent and manage heart disease during a program at Northwestern Michigan College’s Hagerty Center. Light appetizers will be served and registration is required. There is no charge to attend. For more information and to register, call 1-888-838-9160.

Sunday, February 19
VASA Healthy Heart Benefit Tour, 1- 4 pm
Participants are invited to ski or snowshoe with his or her special someone while benefiting Munson’s Cardiac Care Fund which supports the Heart-to-Heart for Women program.
Participants receive a goody bag and free photo in front of a big red heart. Skiers or snowshoers are encouraged to wear creative red outfits and become eligible to win a basket of food from Oryana. There also will be a raffle for a custom-made red couture dress. After the outing, participants are invited into Timber Ridge Resort’s lodge to enjoy special live music and a dinner demo station by Oryana along with heart healthy foods. Cost is $20, with $5 equipment rental if needed. For more information, go to

Weeks of Feb. 13 and 20
Heart to Heart for Women, Appointment needed
Participants will receive a one-on-one screening, assessment, and education. Tests include blood pressure, body mass index, blood sugar and cholesterol, stress and depression levels, nutrition review, smoking and alcohol assessments, and a review of family medical history. Participants will leave with a personalized action plan including risk factor reduction materials and steps for improving heart health. Cost is $45. Grants are available.

Tuesday, Feb. 28
Women’s Exercise Class, Tuesdays, 3:30 - 5 pm
Even for women not entirely comfortable in their sneakers, this six-week class will teach participants all about heart healthy exercise. By the end of the sessions, participants will be ready to join a gym or continue working with Munson Medical Center’s cardiac rehabilitation staff. Prior attendance at a Heart to Heart for Women screening event is required. For more information, call (231) 935-8565.
