This conference will review current evidence-based guidelines important to the perinatal care of mothers and babies in 2014. The use of magnesium sulfate as a neuroprotector for early preterm infants and management approaches of the second stage of labor will be explored. We will discuss approaches to reduce medical legal risks and EMR documentation along with charting strategies to support the standards of care in perinatal nursing. The current neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) activities in the Vermont Oxford Network (VON) collaborative will be addressed as we explore the evidence based practice guidelines in the management of the infant experiencing NAS. We will conclude with an overview of the benefits of using breast milk, the importance of initiating early breastfeeding, and the exclusive use of breast milk as one of the perinatal core measures.
