John W. Stanifer, M.D., MSc., Joins Munson Medical Center

John W. Stanifer, M.D., MSc., has joined the staff of Munson Medical Center as a kidney specialist.

Dr. Stanifer practices at Munson Nephrology Consultants, 4062 W. Royal Dr., in Traverse City. He is accepting new patients, and appointments can be made by calling 231-935-0338. His office accepts most insurances.

Dr. Stanifer grew up on a farm in rural east Tennessee, in the Appalachian Hills. He attended the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Memphis, Tenn., where he met his wife. He has a strong interest in health disparities, rural health, and global health. He trained in a combined internal medicine-global health residency at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C., during which he lived and worked abroad in Tanzania, where he treated patients with rare types of kidney disease, conducted epidemiological research on the high burdens of kidney disease, and even climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Subsequently, Dr. Stanifer completed specialty fellowship training in nephrology at Duke University Medical Center and served as the Chief Fellow at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Although he treats an array of kidney diseases, his particular focus is on the treatment of kidney disease before it becomes kidney failure requiring dialysis. Dr. Stanifer is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology.
