Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital has canceled the face-to-face components of its annual Paint the Town Pink event due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Each October since 2008, the hospital has hosted a ceremony and walk to raise awareness of the importance of early detection in the fight against breast cancer and to honor those affected by the disease.
Nancy Day and Julie Raymond have served as Paint the Town Pink co-chairs for the last twelve years. “We’re disappointed we won’t get to walk together and experience the big day, but we fully support the hospital’s decision,” said Day. Raymond noted that many who come to the walk are particularly vulnerable. “We have cancer patients and people dealing with other health conditions, as well as their caregivers and many medical professionals. We don’t want to put anyone’s health at risk,” she said. Uncertainty about what restrictions on crowd size may be in effect in October were also a factor in the decision. Hundreds gather downtown for the event each year.
The hospital is planning some virtual activities to preserve the spirit of Paint the Town Pink. “Raising awareness about routine screenings and available technology and services has always been an important part of Paint the Town Pink, and the hospital will be honoring that by offering some online educational opportunities,” said Day.
“And it wouldn’t be Paint the Town Pink without a big splash of pink,” added Raymond. Community members will have the opportunity to share photos of themselves wearing pink to demonstrate solidarity with those affected by breast cancer.
Day and Raymond expressed their gratitude for everyone who’s been involved with Paint the Town Pink. “The volunteer, business, school, church, and community support we’ve received since the beginning has been incredible,” said Day. Funds raised through Paint the Town Pink efforts over the years have supported the hospital’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art care in Manistee.
