‘Comprehensive Center’ accreditation ensures top quality care

Metabolic and bariatric surgery patients can be assured that Munson Medical Center’s Bariatric Program provides high-quality, patient-centered, multidisciplinary care following recent national accreditation.

The three-year “Comprehensive Center” accreditation was awarded to Munson Medical Center by the American College of Surgeons and the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). Accreditation is awarded to a bariatric surgical center only after a rigorous review process, during which it proves that it can maintain high practice standards, as well as provide the physical and human resources necessary to meet patient needs. Munson Medical Center and all other accredited centers report their patient outcomes to a national database maintained by the MBSAQIP to demonstrate ongoing compliance.

“We are delighted to receive this accreditation, which further affirms the quality care we provide to patients before, during, and after bariatric procedures,” said Michael A. Nizzi, medical director of Munson Medical Center’s Bariatric Program. “We have been privileged to provide quality, life-saving care to qualifying people in northern Michigan since launching the program in 2003. I believe the comprehensive nature of our weight loss surgery program is key to our patients’ success.”

Munson Medical Center also has been recognized as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence® since 2008. The hospital and surgeons from Grand Traverse Surgery, PC, continue to meet qualifying standards by documenting short- and long-term outcomes. Munson Medical Center’s dedicated, multidisciplinary bariatric team includes surgeons, nurses, medical consultants, nutritionists, psychologists and exercise physiologists.
