Munson Installs New Pool for Rehabilitation Patients

06.24.2015

Facility allows one-on-one treatments with aquatics, physical therapy specialists

Munson Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Services recently installed a new therapeutic resistance pool at Foster Family Community Health Center.

“We’ve had an aquatics program at Club One, formerly Premier Fitness, for several years,” said Kevin Schrider, Rehabilitation Services manager. “Having our own pool gives us more flexibility in terms of scheduling and efficiencies.”

The 12-by-6.5 foot pool opened in May and has been serving a variety of patient needs. Physical therapists work with patients one-on-one to restore movement using the gravity-reduced environment of water. Water’s resistance properties also allow weak muscles to be strengthened earlier than on land.

Therapists provide an individualized program for patients designed to strengthen, stabilize, and provide flexibility as well as pain control. All patients are required to have a prescription from a physician for the program. Conditions helped by the therapy include arthritis, athletic injuries, balance and coordination deficits, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, joint replacement, musculoskeletal disorders, neuromuscular disorders, neurologically impaired pediatric patients, and more.

An aquatics specialist also offers a post-therapy program using recreational therapy to help patients continue their gains.

“We also anticipate that Healthy Weight Center patients and pain clinic patients will be able to take advantage of the pool as well,” Schrider said.

Aquatic therapy is covered by most insurance companies.
