Prostate Cancer Open House Offers Expert Information

09.04.2018

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers – and very curable if detected early.

Munson Medical Center’s Cowell Family Cancer Center offers a special open house from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, to answer questions about screening and treatments for the disease. September is prostate cancer awareness month.

“We know that approximately 90 percent of all prostate cancers are detected in the local and regional stages, so the cure rate is very high,” said Kathy Laraia, executive director of Oncology Services at Munson Healthcare. “Our hope is that people will come and learn about prevention, screening, and the latest treatments offered at the center.”

Members of the cancer center’s multidisciplinary team of nurse navigators and physician specialists – including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and urologists – will be on hand to answer questions and talk about treatments.

Displays will also feature the advanced technology available to treat the disease that includes the da Vinci Surgical System®, SpaceOAR® Hydrogel, brachytherapy suite, and radiation therapy.

TV 7&4 Chief Meteorologist Mark Watkins will also be on hand to discuss his own prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment at Cowell Family Cancer Center.

Cowell Family Cancer Center is located at 217 S. Madison St. in Traverse City.
