9 Tips to Avoid Indoor Falls

Published on Feb. 11, 2021

Waddles the Penguin Supports SafetyIt’s human nature to get distracted by thoughts or multitasking while on the move. But being distracted or in a hurry can increase the chance of a slip, trip, or fall and a serious injury.

Here are some tips to stay safe and avoid indoor slips, trips, and falls.

1. Watch Your Step

Be aware of your surroundings, and learn to recognize potential hazards. Take a minute to think before you move.

2. Maintain Proper Lighting

Poor lighting can camouflage obstacles that could be in the way and cause accidents. Fix broken light fixtures and replace burnt out bulbs quickly so there’s sufficient lighting for your task.

3. Use Safe Indoor Walking Practices

Walk, don’t run, and stay on designated walkways. Be extra cautious of slippery surfaces at entries and exits, polished or freshly waxed floors, or when there’s a change in flooring surfaces.

4. Use Stairs Safely

Proceed slowly as it’s very easy to lose your footing when walking up or down the stairs. Be on the lookout for broken or loose steps. Never run on stairs or intentionally skip steps. Use the handrail. If you’re carrying something while on the stairs, make sure it doesn’t block your vision.

5. Be Extra Cautious When Carrying an Object

Whenever possible, move any obstructions out of your way and look for possible trip hazards like cords, steps, etc. Always be sure the object you’re carrying doesn’t obstruct your vision.

6. Address Walking Hazards Immediately

Take action when you see a slipping or tripping hazard, such as cords, wet floors, or torn carpet.

7. Wear Proper Footwear

Slip-resistant footwear plays a big part in preventing falls. Consider your soles and the types of heels you wear. Always make sure shoelaces are tied.

8. Remove Obstacles in Aisles and Walkways

Keep areas where people walk clean and clutter free. Avoid leaving boxes, files, or bags out in open. Encourage children (and sometimes adults) to put away toys and pick up loose items from the floor.

9. Minimize Distractions

Texting, reading, and talking on the phone can distract your attention and lead to serious injuries.

The Bottom Line

Slow down and pay attention. Slips, trips, and falls commonly occur when people are rushing and not fully paying attention to what they are doing (auto-pilot). Be aware and learn to recognize potential hazards and remind others to do the same.
