EMT Training

EMT Basic training provides an introduction to emergency medical services. This course lays the firm foundation for a career in emergency medical services and is a required prerequisite for further training as an Advanced EMT and Paramedic.

A successful candidate must be able to think fast on their feet and adapt to an ever-changing environment. They must have excellent driving skills and be able to assist paramedics in the field when necessary. EMT Basics provide pre-hospital care, including oxygen, bleeding control, and c-spine immobilization – all training provided in the EMTB course.

Admission Requirements

The following course entry requirements must be submitted no later than the first day of the course.

• High School diploma or GED
• Completed registration form on the Munson Medical Center/EMS Education website
• A copy of your valid Michigan driver's license
• IChat or other background check certificate
• Proof of professional liability insurance for the term of the course
• Vaccinations must be up to date, including:
  • Tetanus and diphtheria toxoids within the past 10 years
  • Measles, mumps, rubella vaccine (two shot series)
  • Varicella vaccine or documentation verifying that you have had the chicken pox
  • Hepatitis B vaccination (must have started the series, or sign a declination form)
  • Negative TB test within the past year
  • Current flu shot
  • Current COVID vaccination, or exemption pre-approved by MREMSE

Use of non-prescription drugs (not over the counter medications), illegal drugs, and alcohol are not permitted while enrolled in the course and on Munson Healthcare premises.

Technical Standards

Technical standards are required of all EMS students. MREMSE student candidates must, with or without accommodations, possess or demonstrate the ability to:

• Complete a pre-requisite program and obtain the licensure associated with the program.
• Communicate effectively with team members in person or via telephone and/or radio equipment.
• Lift, carry, and balance up to 100 pounds (200 pounds with assistance) on level ground, uneven terrain, and up and down stairs.
• Push/pull objects 50 pounds or more and transfer objects of more than 100 pounds.
• Effectively receive and interpret oral, written, and diagnostic forms of instructions.
• Use good judgment and remain calm in high-stress situations.
• Perform medication calculations under high-stress situations; visualize and state the type of medication given and administer it using the proper and prescribed method.
• Knowledgeably operate complex basic and advanced life support equipment under high-stress situations.
• Be unaffected by loud noises and flashing lights.
• Maintain attention to detail for long periods of time.
• Be able to see close up and far away in all conditions in order to drive, properly assess, and treat patients.
• Read at the text books prescribed level of reading.
• Interview patients, their families, and/or bystanders to obtain critical information dealing with mechanism of injury (MOI) or nature of illness (NOI).
• Document in writing or computer-based documentation system, all relevant information in prescribed format in light of legal ramifications.
• Relay succinct information appropriately with coworkers, nurses, physicians, and other medical professional in regards with the status of your patient.
• Use manual dexterity with the ability to perform all tasks related to the highest quality of patient care.
• Run, walk, kneel, bend, navigate stairs, retrieve, and carry all manner of equipment, stand for periods of time, write reports and stay in uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods of time.
• Withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture.
• Work with other providers to make appropriate patient care and treatment decisions.
• Behave professionally and perform all aspects of work in an ethical manner in relation to peers, faculty, staff, and patients.
• Adhere to the codes of confidentiality.
• Conform with appropriate standards of dress, appearance, language, and public behavior.
• Show respect for individuals of different age, ethnic background, religion, and/or sexual orientation.
• Follow direction from instructors and team leaders to ensure the completion of assignments and lab scenarios.

Training spans six months and ends with a written exam and practical skills testing.

To register, complete the online registration form, required documentation, and submit the $250 deposit. Remaining balance is due by the first day of class, unless other arrangements have been made with the MMC Regional EMS Education Manager.

Current Class Schedule

Classes will be held Monday and Wednesday from 5pm to 9pm.  There will also be the potential for occasional classes on some Fridays or Saturdays from 8am to 5pm.  Additional time outside of class will be required for clinical requirements and completion of assignments.

Clinical training takes place at Munson Medical Center, area EMS agencies, and clinical sites throughout Michigan TBD. 

Course Size

Course size is limited to 16 students. Pre-course testing and entry criteria will be used to select the most qualified candidates if we receive more than 16 applicants. MMC Regional EMS Education reserves the right to cancel the course if fewer than 10 qualified students are enrolled.

Course Fees and Payments

A course fee of $2,000 includes, textbooks, 1 clinical uniform, and 1 class/lab t-shirt.  The $250 registration deposit will be applied against the total cost of the program. The remainder ($1,750) is due on or before the first day of class, unless other arrangements have been made with the MMC Regional EMS Education Manager.

Refund Policy

All refund requests must be delivered in writing within 48 hours of cancellation to the course instructor or MMC Regional EMS Education at 1105 Sixth St., Traverse City, MI 49684.

• A 100 percent refund will be issued if the program is cancelled by the sponsor.
• A 100 percent refund LESS the $250 deposit will be issued if the student has been accepted into the program and notifies, in writing, the manager or lead instructor PRIOR to the beginning of the second class. 
• No refunds will be issued after the beginning of the second class.
• Textbooks may be returned upon cancellation if they are not written in and are in saleable condition; otherwise the cost of the textbooks will not be refunded.
