Emergency Department Physician Joins Paul Oliver

01.09.2020

Emergency medicine physician Monica Johnson, M.D., recently joined Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital as director of the Emergency Department.

Dr. Johnson brings 25 years of experience mainly in rural emergency medicine and understands the importance of a critical access hospital. Her new role is the result of Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital’s Board of Trustees strategic plan approved last August to enhance access to emergency and acute care services.

“Being able to keep patients close to home during times of acute medical needs is hugely beneficial,” Dr. Johnson said. “We are here no matter what issue is – whether it’s a relatively minor chronic condition or a life threatening situation. Patients first is my guiding principle and it is truly a blessing to have the knowledge to help.”

In addition to her years of experience in emergency medicine, Dr. Johnson also spent 15 years as licensed practical nurse and RN in critical care. During that time, she said she was always impressed with the attitude of the emergency providers.

“They were outgoing and so well rounded. I love the variety in emergency medicine and how we’re the front door to whatever else they might need,” she said. “We have the initial opportunity to make a positive impact on someone’s life.”

Johnson said hospital leadership has done a good job identifying important areas where the hospital can best serve the community. One example is achieving the Level IV Trauma designation, which tells the community the hospital has demonstrated gold-standard quality care when patients arrive with injuries.

“I would love to see Paul Oliver work towards a geriatric care of excellence award and pediatric preparedness,” she said. “These awards and certifications ensure that we are serving the entire community in a safe and high quality manner.”
