What Does a Critical Care Nurse Do?

Critical care nurses manage and monitor the most severely ill patients, often addressing life-threatening illnesses or injuries. They work closely with other members of the healthcare team, including physicians, surgeons, advanced practiced professionals, respiratory therapists, and case managers, to ensure the best care for the patient.

Critical care nurses perform complex assessments and manage intensive interventions and therapies. The condition of a severely ill patient can change rapidly, so these professionals must be able to adapt quickly and work well under pressure.

What Qualifications Do Critical Care Nurses Need?

Munson Healthcare’s critical care nurses will have graduated from a state-approved nursing education program and be registered or planning to take the state board licensing exam. Experience in the clinical area being applied to is desirable but not required. All critical care nurses must maintain Basic Life Support certifications as well as specialty life support certifications applicable to the area of specialty. For specific details, view the requirements on our job postings.
