Munson Medical Center’s Cowell Family Cancer Center recently joined the national list of Screening Centers of Excellence.

The Lung Cancer Alliance cited Cowell Family Cancer Center’s ongoing commitment to responsible lung cancer screening and use of low dose CT scans in making the recognition.

“We are proud and honored to be working with Munson Medical Center,” said Laurie Fenton Ambrose, president and CEO of the Lung Cancer Alliance. “Their commitment to practice responsible lung cancer screening will lead to advancements in research and many lives saved.”

To be eligible for the recognition, a screening center must:

  • Provide patients clear information on the risks and benefits of CT screening
  • Comply with up-to-date best practice standards for managing CT screen quality, radiation dose, and diagnostic procedures
  • Work collectively as a diagnostic team to carry out the process of screening, diagnosis and the continuum of care
  • Refer patients who still smoke to a tobacco cessation program
  • Provide timely results of a screening scan to the patient or referring physician as appropriate

Cowell Family Cancer Center lung cancer screening coordinator Kendra Worden, M.S.N., F.N.P.-C, AOCNP, said the recognition affirms the quality of care patients undergoing lung cancer screening receive at the center.

“We are excited to be recognized by the Lung Cancer Alliance for the quality of care our patients receive,” she said. “Our Radiology team does excellent work. We know low dose CT screening is the only proven method to detect lung cancer at an early and treatable stage.”
