Planning for Long-Term Care

The best time to start thinking about long-term care is before you need it! People need long-term care for a variety of reasons, so prepare for your future by having a plan in place.

Start by thinking about what would happen if you became seriously ill or disabled. Talk to your family, friends, and lawyer about who would provide care for you if you needed help for a long time. It’s also helpful to prepare healthcare advance directives, so that if something does happen to you, your loved ones can advocate for you and your desires for care.

Talk to your primary care provider about your plan. Your provider can help guide you to the right resources for your health need, should you need them. Don’t have a primary care provider? Munson Healthcare’s Find-A-Doctor service can help you find the best provider for your needs.

Your Long-Term Care Options

There are many options for care, depending on you or your loved one’s needs.

Long-Term Care

Long-term care involves a variety of services designed to meet a person’s health or personal care needs for an extended period of time. These services help people live as independently and safely as possible when they can no longer perform everyday activities on their own. Long-term care is provided in different places by different caregivers, depending on a person’s needs.

Most long-term care is provided at home by unpaid family members and friends. It can also be given in a facility such as a nursing home or in the community, for example, in an adult day care center. Munson Healthcare has four long-term care facilities, and others may exist in your community that are well suited for your needs.

Assisted Living

Assisted living is for people who need help with daily care, but not as much help as a nursing home provides. Assisted living facilities range in size from as few as 25 residents to 120 or more. Typically, a few “levels of care” are offered, with residents paying more for higher levels of care. These communities may also be known as Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CRCCs) or Life Care Communities.

Home Care

Home-based long-term care includes health, personal, and support services to help people stay at home and live as independently as possible. Most care is provided either in the home of the person receiving services or at a family member’s home. In-home services may be short-term—such as recovery from surgery—or long-term, for people who need ongoing assistance.

Private Duty services may also be available to help with needs such as medication management/assistance, in home nursing care/lab draws, or infusion therapy.

Respite Services

Caring for a loved one with serious medical conditions at home can be rewarding, but it can also be exhausting – both physically and emotionally. Respite care is a way to give caregivers much-needed time to rejuvenate.

At Munson Healthcare’s Paul Oliver Living and Rehabilitation Center, your family member has beautiful accommodations and continuous care while you take some time to catch up with other personal, family, or work matters.

Commission on Aging Resources

For older adults to wish to stay in their homes, your local Commission on Aging helps provide resources for adults aged 60 and older to help support independence. These resources can sometimes include respite services for caregivers.
