Inpatient Rehabilitation

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City offers comprehensive care and integrated services following a debilitating illness or injury including:

  • Amputations
  • Cancer
  • Debility/deconditioning following prolonged hospital stay, surgery or lengthy illness
  • Hip/femur fractures
  • Major multiple traumas and fractures
  • Neurological Disorders (multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease)
  • Spinal cord injuries/encephalopathy
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries

Through our collaboration with the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Network, northern Michigan patients have increased access to specialists, streamlined care coordination and the highest standard of rehabilitation care close to home.

Your success is our top priority. In annual outcomes studies, our program is shown to exceed the national average in the rate of patients successfully discharged to live in the community, as well as in the area of functional improvement.

Your Care Team

Your rehab team may include:

  • Case managers
  • Neuropsychologist 
  • Nurses, certified in rehabilitation 
  • Occupational therapists
  • Physical therapists
  • Physicians, board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation 
  • Speech/language therapists

You are the most important person on your rehab team. Research shows that the sooner you begin vigorous rehabilitation, the better your outcome will be. Rehab takes dedication and hard work. The effort you put into it now will reap great rewards. 

Your family and/or support person are also essential to your recovery. Munson Manor Hospitality House is available for family members of out-of town patients.

Your Rehab Journey

Our Rehabilitation Unit is located on the first floor of Munson Medical Center. Semi-private and private rooms are assigned according to medical necessity. When possible, you will be given the type of room you desire. Rooms are equipped with phones and televisions.

Inpatient rehabilitation can help you learn new skills and assist you in adapting to your present abilities in order to maintain as much independence as possible. You will work on improving your strength, balance and motor skills for at least three hours, 5 to 6 days a week.

  • Community re-entry outing 
  • Comprehensive discharge planning 
  • Driving assessments 
  • Equipment needs
  • Home assessment 
  • Home care coordination 
  • Recreation therapy 
  • Sub-specialty physicians

Admissions Criteria

Patients admitted to our unit require an intensive rehabilitation program that includes at least two therapy disciplines and an inpatient stay. They must be sufficiently stable to participate in rehabilitation.

Patients must be capable of measurable improvement in functional capacity within a reasonable period of time and have a realistic goal of returning to a community-based living environment.
