Meet Mary

Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital began in 1891 when a small group of Grand Rapids women launched a fundraising campaign to secure an available or “free” bed in a local hospital out of growing concern for the medical care needs of patients with limited financial means. But this was no ordinary campaign – the ladies specifically asked for contributions from everyone named Mary and from those who had friends or relatives with the name. On January 1, 2019, officials at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital and Munson Healthcare launched a joint operating agreement. How do northern Michigan patients benefit? The road to recovery is shorter with nationally recognized rehabilitation right in the region. Known for helping patients achieve outstanding outcomes, Mary Free Bed experts are bringing programs new to the area, providing clinical education and continuing to manage inpatient and outpatient services. Leaders are also exploring the feasibility of building a rehabilitation hospital.
