Munson Healthcare President and CEO Ed Ness received a double dose of honors from the Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA) this week with the 2022 Healthcare Leadership Award and the 2021 Grassroots Champion Award.
The MHA met on Mackinac Island for its annual meeting. Ness was one of three healthcare executives in the state to receive the leadership recognition.
“The award honors outstanding individuals who have provided exceptional leadership to healthcare organizations and to the health and well-being of the community,” an MHA news release states.
The MHA recognition commends Ness for his leadership in developing collaborative partnerships with other healthcare systems and the integration of multiple specialty services in Traverse City providing both quality local care and regional access to sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities.
“During the pandemic, Ness led efforts to coordinate response plans with local health departments and others, ensuring broad access to vaccinations,” the MHA states. Ness has served 12 years on the MHA board and was board president in 2020 -21 as the pandemic surged through the state.
Additionally, in partnership with the American Hospital Association, the MHA recognized Ness with its 2021 MHA Grassroots Champion Award which honors a hospital leader who effectively educates elected officials at the state and federal level on how major issues affect the hospital’s vital role in the community, and who have broadened the base of community support for the hospital, as well as who tirelessly advocate for hospital patients.
Ness joined Munson Medical Center as executive vice present and chief operating officer in 1999. He assumed his current position at Munson Healthcare in 2010 and has led the effort to integrate nine hospitals across northern Michigan during the past decade.
“I appreciate the recognition from the MHA and the many dedicated professionals in the organization who continue to advocate for quality health care in the state,” he said. “It’s a privilege and honor to serve with them.”
Ness directed a $1,000 donation that is part of the leadership award to go to the Chill Out for Winter Safety program which teaches children to be smart and safe while sledding and having winter fun.
