Encouraging Smokers to Quit Cold Turkey and get a Sandwich

11.10.2017
Munson Medical Center’s Cowell Family Cancer Center will offer turkey sandwiches for those who want to quit cold turkey on Great American Smokeout day, Thursday Nov. 16.

The sandwiches and information on low-dose CT screening, smoking cessation, the next Freedom from Smoking class, and more will be available for the public from 11a.m. – 1 p.m. in the cancer center’s first floor Sprout Café.

“Quitting is the single best thing you can do for your health,” said Patti Moore, R.N., a nurse navigator for lung cancer patients at the cancer center.

Each year, the third Thursday in November is designated as a day for smokers to break from tobacco for the day and ideally forever. The American Cancer Society reports about 36.5 million Americans still smoke cigarettes and tobacco use remains the largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the world.

While cigarette use is on the decline, cigar, pipe, and hookah smoking are increasing. Getting help through counseling or medications can double or triple the chances of quitting successfully.

The American Cancer Society’s eight-session Freedom from Smoking class is designed to help smokers break the chains of nicotine. The next class will start on Jan. 8, 2018.

Research shows smoking clearly increases the chance for lung cancer, however, non-smokers also can be diagnosed with the disease. More information on Freedom from Smoking Day and resources available at the American Cancer Society can be found at cancer.org/smokeout, or call 1-800-227-2345.
