Munson Healthcare is pleased to welcome Edward R. Hagen, M.D., as a board-certified specialist in general surgery who is sub-specialty trained in colon and rectal surgery.
Dr. Hagen graduated from medical school at Creighton University, Omaha, Neb. He completed a residency in general surgery at Swedish Hospital Medical Center, Seattle, Wash., and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Spectrum Health (Ferguson Clinic) – Michigan State University Program, Grand Rapids, Mich.
Dr. Hagen and his wife have traveled all over the country for his medical and surgical training. When they visited northern Michigan and experienced the beautiful outdoors and the friendliness and generosity of the Midwest, they knew it was the perfect place to live and work.
He has special interests in minimally invasive surgery including laparoscopic and robotic surgery, and the surgical treatment of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, anorectal disease, and hernias.
"Rectal cancer is a very complex disease,” Dr. Hagen said. “It requires a multidisciplinary team of physicians and nurses to optimize the treatment plan. At Munson Healthcare, we have put together an extraordinary team and being a part of that is incredible.”
Dr. Hagen’s favorite part of practicing medicine is getting to know his patients and guiding them through their diagnosis and treatment plan.
“Receiving a new cancer diagnosis or reviewing a major operation can be frightening,” he said. “I want each patient to understand their diagnosis and treatment plan fully and be an equal part of the team. I really look forward to helping the community and having a positive impact.”
In his free time, he and his wife like to try new restaurants, hike, and ski.
