Kidney stones are comprised of the dietary minerals present in urine. They usually simply pass in the urine, but if they become too large, they can block the ureters, resulting in pain and potentially leading to infection or more serious complications.
In a lithotripsy procedure, focused sound waves are directed at the stones while the patient is made comfortable. The waves break the stones into small pieces, about the size of grains of sand, which can then pass more easily through the urinary tract. Because the procedure is noninvasive, recovery time is quicker and costs are lower. A treatment takes about 45 minutes, and patients are usually back to their regular activities within a day or two. The majority of patients are free of stones three months after the treatment.
Not all patients with kidney or ureter stones are good candidates for the procedure. Whether lithotripsy is an option depends on the size, quantity, and location of the stones.
