A general surgeon has expertise in diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with disease and disorders of the head and neck, breast, skin and soft tissues, abdomen, extremities, and the gastrointestinal, vascular, and endocrine systems. Common problems treated by a general surgeon include hernias, tumors, gallstones, appendicitis, bowel obstructions, colon inflammations and cancers. General surgeons may further specialize in an additional Board certification from the American Board of Surgery.
