Munson Medical Center pharmacist Hope Broxterman, Pharm.D., was recently named president of the Michigan Pharmacists Association.
Broxterman has been a clinical pharmacist at Munson Medical Center since 2011 and has focused her practice on critical care/cardiology areas of the hospital since 2013. She said her role at the Michigan Pharmacists Association allows her to promote the pharmacy profession as well as showcase the scope of practice available to pharmacists.
“The COVID-19 pandemic opened people’s eyes to what pharmacists can do,” she said. “I’m grateful to now have this opportunity to help further advance the profession.”
In addition to traditional roles such as sterile compounding and dosing medications, pharmacists in the state are now involved in telemedicine, providing immunizations, prescribing COVID-19 treatments, and other services.
A native of Ellsworth, Broxterman first considered a career in pharmacy after job shadowing a pharmacist while in high school. She attended Northwestern Michigan College for her pre-pharmacy course work and then was accepted into the pharmacy school at Ferris State University.
Broxterman became a member of the Michigan Pharmacists Association in 2008 as a means to earn extra credit in a college pharmacy course. She continued to stay active following graduation in 2010.
As president, she leads a 16-member executive board. She plans to continue building on momentum created as pharmacists stepped up to help meet COVID-19 pandemic needs as well as continue to advocate for legislation that positively impacts healthcare and the pharmacy community.
“Pharmacists are front-line care providers in our communities,” she said. “This is our moment to advance our profession’s capabilities based on our thorough education, training, and proven clinical performance.”
