OB/GYN Offers New Treatment for Pelvic Organ Prolapse

05.02.2023

A new minimally invasive procedure to help women suffering from prolapse of the vagina and bladder is available at Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital through the expertise of OB/GYN Stacey Sensor, D.O., FACOOG.

Research shows that about one-third of women experience prolapse in their lifetime.

“We’re excited to offer the women of northern Michigan what is called robotic sacrocolpopexy,” Dr. Sensor said. “This is an innovative, minimally invasive way to allow women to regain control of their body and allow for a more active and confident lifestyle.”

Symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse include:

  • A feeling of pressure or heaviness in the pelvis or lower back
  • A bulge or lump coming from the vagina
  • Sudden urges to urinate or leakage
  • Constipation
  • Pain during intercourse

A board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Sensor in 2022 achieved accreditation as a surgeon of excellence in robotic surgery at the hospital through the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). Otsego Memorial Hospital also is the first facility in northern Michigan to be designated as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by the SRC.

During robotic sacrocolpopexy, Dr. Sensor uses the hospital’s da Vinci® Surgical System to make small incisions in the lower belly of a patient that then allow her to insert small tools as well as a tiny camera to view the pelvic organs. She then uses the tools to sew a graft of tissue or synthetic mesh onto the organs that have prolapsed and attaches the graft or mesh onto a bony area at the lower part of the spinal column to keep the organs in place.

Patients typically have fewer surgical complications, less pain and blood loss, and a shorter hospital stay.

“For many, this is a great alternative to traditional open surgery,” Dr. Sensor said.
