Donald J. Scholten II, M.D., Ph.D., Joins Munson Healthcare

08.17.2023

Munson Healthcare Orthopedic Institute is pleased to welcome Donald J. Scholten II, M.D., Ph.D., to the medical staff.

A Michigan native born and raised in Grand Rapids, Dr. Scholten graduated with a chemistry degree from Hope College in Holland, Mich., where he played on the men’s golf team for four years. He continued his education at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and also obtained a Ph.D. in cellular and molecular genetics from the Van Andel Institute Graduate School. He completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., followed by a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Scholten chose orthopedic surgery due to the significant impact musculoskeletal conditions can have on an individual’s overall well-being. He enjoys the large array of treatment options available to help his patients including those that do not involve surgery. Dr. Scholten is subspecialty trained in sports medicine with a primary focus on arthroscopic and open treatments of knee and shoulder conditions such as meniscus tears, ligament injuries, rotator cuff tears, shoulder arthritis, and much more.

“I enjoy listening to my patients and developing an individualized treatment plan on how we can get them back to doing what they enjoy,” he said. “That doesn’t always have to involve surgery and we explore all treatment options available before deciding on the best one for each patient.”

In his free time, Dr. Scholten enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, and two dogs, as well as playing golf. They are thrilled to be settling down in northern Michigan and serving the community.
