Recently, Munson Medical Center became one of the first hospitals in the nation and the first in Michigan to use the newly FDA-approved Onyx 12™ liquid embolic agent for middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization in the treatment of acute-on-chronic subdural hematomas. The minimally invasive procedure has been shown to reduce hematoma recurrence, potentially decreasing the need for repeat surgeries, supporting faster recovery, and improving patient outcomes. Compared with earlier formulations, Onyx 12™ has a lower viscosity, allowing for it to better penetrate more distal smaller vessels to allow for better long-term results.
Brent Flusty, DO, was the first interventional neurologist to use Onyx 12™ at Munson. “MMA embolization is now a standard-of-care adjunct treatment for acute-on-chronic subdural hematomas,” said Dr. Flusty. “Munson is proud to bring leading-edge neurovascular surgical technology to Northern Michigan.”
