Ordering Outpatient Heart Monitors for Your Patients

Traverse Heart & Vascular offers the Zio 14-day Extended Holter and Zio MCT monitors for outpatient heart monitoring. For details, read a letter from Cardiologist Dr. Anna Booher  (updated 09.17.25).

Please follow the updated ordering guidelines.  (updated 09.17.25).

Note: 14 day (MCT or Holter) are suitable for most outpatients without high-risk symptoms. Consider a cardiology consult if you feel a 30-day monitor is warranted. Cardiology is using a 30-day option in very few, selected cases. See letter and ordering guidelines linked above.

Order Options:
To reflect the updated ordering guidelines, the following orders are now available for outpatient cardiac rhythm monitoring:

  • 14 and 30 day MCT: Typically used for higher risk patients (refer to flow sheet). THV will be notified real time of significant arrythmia/serious events. Consider Cardiology Consult if appropriate.
  • Extended Holter (3-7 and 7-14 days): Patient wears for the entire monitoring period and then sends this back for analysis with the exception of very high-risk events (>15 second pauses, ventricular tachycardia). There is otherwise not real-time notification of events. 14-day extended Holter has replaced prior “event monitor” order.
  • 24 and 48 hour Holters can still be ordered per usual.

Orders with attached CPT codes should be used when ordered on an outpatient/outpatient encounter.
