Sepsis

Sepsis is the leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals. The risk of mortality increases almost 8% for every hour that care is delayed. 80% of sepsis deaths could have been avoided with more rapid recognition and treatment.

Signs and Symptoms of Sepsis in Adults
Signs and Symptoms of Sepsis in Children
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Shortness of breath
  • High heart rate
  • Fever, shivering, or feeling very cold
  • Extreme pain or discomfort
  • Clammy or sweaty skin
  • Feels abnormally cold to touch
  • Looks bluish, mottled, or has very pale skin
  • Has a rash that does not fade when pressed
  • Is breathing very fast
  • Has a convulsion
  • Is very lethargic or difficult to wake

Additionally, for children under 5 years:

  • Not drinking or eating
  • Repeated vomiting
  • 12 hours without urinating
