Moving Forward: New Class Helps Parkinson’s Patients

02.16.2018
Putting your best foot forward can become challenging for individuals experiencing Parkinson’s disease.

A new exercise class at Betsie Hosick Fitness Center focuses on helping Parkinson’s patients and others with movement-related challenges improve their mobility and maintain muscle control using techniques based on evidenced-based research.

Occupational therapist Karen Getz, O.T., said the “Moving Forward” class is designed around studies that show large, sustained movement helps individuals slow the effects of Parkinson’s disease.

“We use what we call ‘large amplitude’ movement along with positioning to help participants maintain and improve motor skills,” she said. “One of the keys to success is repetition of the movements. Participants who take the class also gain cardio benefit and functional endurance training.”

The class meets at 11 a.m. on Thursdays at the fitness center. For more information, call 231-352-9661.

Getz brings a wealth of experience as an occupational therapist to the class and believes patients will enjoy the camaraderie. “I really enjoy working with the participants and appreciate their sense of humor and life experiences,” she said.

Betsie Hosick Health and Fitness Center is located at 102 Airport Road in Frankfort.
