Women's Care and Newborn Innovations

Throughout the course of a woman's life, the types of health care and preferences regarding how it is delivered will change. Women not only rely on their hospitals to provide advanced and state-of-the art equipment, but also require their physicians to be exceptional and knowledgeable specialists when it comes to their obstetrics and gynecology care. Our staff works every day to make a difference in the lives of female patients.

Charlevoix Hospital leadership continuously assesses clinical needs and are upgrading technology and equipment for the Family Birth Center and Outpatient Gynecology Care. Purchasing  innovative equipment for Charlevoix Hospital is an important step in enhancing top-quality care for northern Michigan females AND their families.

Central Fetal Monitoring System

A central fetal monitor is a vital piece of equipment used for every birth in the maternity unit. Central fetal monitoring systems assist in overseeing patient (the mother and child) vitals during labor, delivery, and recovery. The new system will save time and increase efficiencies in labor and delivery during the course of a busy day in the maternity unit. The cost to purchase this central fetal monitoring system is $100,000.

Supporting Physician Recruitment

Competition is extremely fierce for the relatively few available obstetricians and gynecologists. In 2019, the hospital was able to hire two new OB/GYNs in order to expand access to care. In order to meet patient demand the hospital will need to purchase two ultrasound machines to support the work of the new providers. The estimated cost for these machines is $75,000 each, creating a $150,000 need for the obstetrics unit.

Additional items to purchase include:

  • The HUGS Infant Protection System is the global #1 infant security system used to protect infants and pediatric patients in more than 1,600 hospitals worldwide. Cost: $73,000
  • A CARESCAPE Patient Monitor will allow customized solutions to keep vitals, readings, and patient biometric data together at every step of care. Cost: $12,500
  • Two new birthing beds. Cost: $15,000
  • Newborn hearing screening device. Cost: $13,000
  • Jaundice meter machine. Cost: $8,000

The total need for Women's Care and Newborn Innovations is $371,500

The Innovation Fund at Charlevoix Hospital is used to fund new equipment, such as:

  • Two new blood analyzers in our laboratory, which are critical to lab function. These cutting-edge analyzers will be more accurate and will dramatically shorten the wait time for results. Cost: $60,000 each
  • A state-of-the-art orthopedic Hana® table allows a less invasive approach to total hip replacement surgery, resulting in faster healing and recovery.  Cost: $80,000
  • A cardiovascular ultrasound machine with enhanced diagnostic capabilities provides improved results. Cost: $120,000
  • Saebo rehabilitation therapy assists patients suffering from a neurological condition, such as a stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis or muscular dystrophy. These therapy devices improve patient mobility and functional use of arms and legs, allowing patients to regain independence and the self-sufficiency for personal tasks and activities. Cost: $25,000
