Heart Services

Part of Munson Healthcare’s success is an award-winning heart program with specialty clinics in 10 locations, including the Webber Heart Center at Munson Medical Center, northern Michigan’s regional referral center. With 127 beds, the Webber Heart Center provides inpatient services for more than 8,200 heart patients every year.

Electrophysiology Lab

At least 5 million people in the U.S. suffer from an irregular heartbeat, known as atrial fibrillation (A-Fib). It is important to manage and treat this condition, with procedures such as A-Fib ablations, to help prevent stroke and heart failure.

The number of ablations performed at Munson Medical Center has grown by more than 90 percent over the last three years. Patients currently wait more than eight weeks to have the procedure performed, and the demand continues to increase. The current EP lab at Munson Medical Center is at maximum capacity and a second Electrophysiology Lab (EP Lab) is required. The cost to build and equip a new EP Lab is $3.5 million.

Cardiac Diagnostic Equipment

In order to provide a top-quality heart program, technology and equipment must be continually upgraded and replaced to provide physicians with the most accurate information they need to treat their patients.

Munson Medical Center needs to maintain top-quality heart care by:

  • Purchasing new ultrasound equipment routinely used to diagnose and assess cardiac conditions and blood flow patterns. The cost of 12 new ultrasound machines is $2.4 million, or $200,000 per machine.
  • Upgrading cardiac catheterization imaging equipment is critical in ensuring Munson Medical Center can provide the best of interventional care to the sickest heart patients. In order to ensure patients are being cared for using the latest technology, cath lab imaging equipment should be replaced regularly. Munson Medical Center is in the process of updating the cardiac cath labs; two have been completed and two remain to be updated. Estimated total cost: $2.4 million.

Expanding Heart Care Programs and Services

Munson Healthcare currently provides outpatient heart clinics at 10 sites throughout northern Michigan so patients can be seen at their local hospital.

We need well-equipped outpatient clinics close to each local Munson Healthcare community hospital. These sites will electronically connect into the Webber Heart Center, giving patients and physicians seamless service integration.

The vision requires funding for buildings and renovations, and upgraded hospital diagnostic equipment and technology. The work to enhance these services began in 2016 and is expected to continue in the coming years as funding becomes available. Estimated cost is $7 million.
