What is a Rapid Antigen Test Versus a PCR Test?

PCR Tests

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test is a molecular test that closely studies genetic material from within a virus particle (usually obtained with a nasal swab). PCR tests are considered to be the most accurate tests available because they’re highly sensitive at detection. The PCR test is often required for travel, as it can detect COVID-19 positivity even without symptoms.

PCR Testing Result Window: PCR tests are sent to a lab and results are typically available within 72 hours.

Antigen Tests

Antigen tests detect specific proteins from a virus particle. They are less sensitive than a PCR test, so results are most accurate when you’re experiencing symptoms. Unlike PCR tests, however, antigen test results are typically available same-day.

Antigen Testing Result Window: Same-day results. With a rapid antigen test, results are generally available within 15 minutes. In some cases, a PCR test will need to be performed after an antigen test to confirm results.

Munson Healthcare performs both antigen and PCR tests – the test that suits you best depends on your reason for testing and as well as your location.
